Gents,
Am upgrading my 4300 (very nice little tractor w/100 hrs.) to a 4510 or 4710. For about $2700 more money, get eight more HP. Will I be able to notice the extra horses for the extta money?

I assume you're not getting a hydro since the 4510 isn't available with one. Without knowing what you are intending on doing, it's hard to comment. If you have a 7' medium duty brush hog, then yes. If you have a 5' finish mower, then I doubt it. My personal preference would be to get the 4610 with the hydro. But that's my preference for my property and uses.

4710 has a bigger motor (134 vs 121 cu in.) and significantly more peak torque than the 4510. Whether it's worth the extra spare change is your call. Most owners seem to recommend the 4610 over the 4510 for the smaller price difference. I'm planning on a 4710, but will fall back to a 4610 if the local dealers are too proud of the 4710. The 4710 is microscopically less fuel efficient than the 4510/4610 per hp produced. ....

I would suggest you go with the ehydro and get the 4610 or if the extra 4 HP is worth about $1800 to you, go with the 4710. Either one I am sure you will be delighted with. I recently procured 15 4710's for the 101st Airborne to tow helicopters (as heave as 50,000 lbs.) on the flight line and in the field.
These tractors have been deployed for 3 months in Kuwait and Iraq and I have not had any reports of problems with maintenance or performance. The soldiers love these tractors. I personally own a 4410 and love mine as well. Later on down the road, I feel the resale/trade in value of the 4710 & 4610 will be much higher as well. The extra HP will give you the option to expand out into different and larger equipment too. Good luck on your decision. ....

I would have like to have the 4710 too, but I also needed to watch my budget. I purchased the 4510. According to JD list prices when I purchased, there was a substantial difference between the 4510 with 12/12 powRev at $21,279 and the 4610 ehydro at 24,139, with the 4710 ehydro listing at 25,909. You do get more bells and whistles with the ehydo's, but I felt I really didn't need them. I opted to use the money saved by buying the 4510, to have factory top and tilt kit, R4 tires, fwd and back lights ETC. installed. ....

Then I guess Chief & I are making the correct recommendation, just depends on the budget. I know what that's about. I would have loved a 4610/hydro but couldn't afford it. I ended up with a Century 3045. Same 48 HP Yanmar four diesel engine as the 4710, 12x12 shuttle, but about $7K less. In most cases getting the most power in a frame size that is suitable for your needs is the best option. There are exceptions. The JD 4410 is priced much higher than the 4310, same with Kubota 3130 and 3430 for a limited benefit. So many trade up, yet have you ever heard of someone trading a 4710 for a 4510 because they had too much power or didn't want the hydro? JMHO
